One of my greatest passions expressed through music, broadcasting, and books has always been to inspire and guide others. As I prepare to lay my father to rest this weekend, I dedicate this book to him and to my mother, in gratitude for the strong foundation they laid in raising us. In reflecting on his life and compiling tributes, one truth shines clearly: he was a father to many, nurturing and shaping the lives of all who crossed his path.

In the coming months, I will be releasing three books. The first, “Who Is Keeping Your Gate?,” was birthed out of my work with children and parents through Reveal Impact Initiative and the Writers Blog. It is both a prophetic and practical guide for every parent, guardian, and spiritual mentor committed to raising children grounded in truth and guided by God.

Consistency isn’t just a habit; it is a leadership strategy!

I had the honour of hosting Charles Kojo VanDyck on The Writers Blog Talk Show, where we discussed his insightful book, “The Art and Science of Consistent Leadership: Steady Steps to Extraordinary Impact.”

I had the joy of welcoming my friend, Priscilla M. Wellington – Author, Founder & CEO of Customer Service Africa and Green Trek Tours on The Writers Blog Talk Show.

Priscilla, fondly described as “A Customer Service Powerhouse,” and “The Power Smile Ambassador” keeps reminding us that customer service isn’t just a corporate buzzword, but about people, relationships, and impact.

Africa Speaks

A few weeks ago, I was hit by news that shook me deeply; the passing of my father.

We all knew it was coming at some point, but the suddenness of it caught me unprepared. It left me unstable for days.

Meanwhile, life and work continued to demand my attention. My team members kept calling:

“Miss Vickie, we need to record new TV episodes.”

“We need to schedule authors.”

“You have speaking engagements here and there.”

“Rehearsals for THRONOS 2025 (our annual worship experience), are ongoing…”

And there I was – absent, broken, and struggling. For someone who is usually the one holding others up, I found myself in a complete mess.

Some people said to me, “But your dad was old, why does it hurt this much?” Others tried to comfort me with, “He fought a good fight, he’s in a better place.” Some even said that I feel the impact more because I am the youngest. But grief doesn’t discriminate by age or birth order. The loss of a father cuts deeply, no matter who you are.

Their words were well-meant, but in those moments, they only echoed in my heart as questions: “Do they truly understand what they’re saying?”

The truth is, we often underestimate the depth of grief, especially when it involves losing someone as close as a parent. How do you deal with it? How do you pick up the pieces?

I’ve come to learn that grief is not something you “get over”- just like that. However, it passes with time.

I am constantly reminded in this valley that… “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). Yes, it is well with our souls.

I am journaling more these days, reflecting on both memories and lessons, but writing my tribute to my dad has been harder than I ever imagined. Yet, I trust that healing comes in gentle waves.

May we all learn not only to grieve with grace, but also to comfort others with compassion.

To everyone walking through grief right now, my prayer is that the Lord will carry you through, one day at a time.

1 Samuel 16:12-13, 23 says,

“So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes. And the Lord said, “This is the one; anoint him.” So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel TOOK THE FLASK OF OLIVE OIL he had brought and ANOINTED DAVID WITH THE OIL. And THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD CAME POWERFULLY UPON DAVID FROM THAT DAY ON. Then Samuel returned to Ramah. And WHENEVER THE TORMENTING SPIRIT from God TROUBLED Saul, David would PLAY THE HARP. Then Saul would FEEL BETTER, and the TORMENTING SPIRIT WOULD GO AWAY.”

Anytime I read this account, I ask myself, “What has been the POSITIVE IMPACT of my ministry since the Lord chose and anointed me for this office?” This question amongst several others keeps me in check in my walk as a Music Minister. 

David was first of all PICKED/CHOSEN for service. Then he was ANOINTED for that particular service. And then, he AFFECTED all around him with his GIFT by virtue of the ANOINTING. 

Some singers and instrumentalists find themselves in the ministry because they have the skill and passion for it. Eventually, they are anointed for it. Others from the word go are CALLED (from their mother’s womb) for this service. Whichever scenario fits your story, YOU ARE in the service. Question is, how well are you using the OIL and GRACE on your life? Are you showing off your skill? Are you manipulating others because of your gift? Are you living your life anyhow because you feel on top of the world?

My desire as a Song Minister is to allow the Holy Spirit to SING and SPEAK through me anytime I am given the opportunity. At the end of the day, it is His job to CONVICT, TRANSFORM and cause a TURN AROUND in the lives of those who sit under my ministrations. If there is no impact, then I am doing my God a disservice, don’t you think?

Dear Musician, in these times, it is very easy to stray. However, make that conscious decision to stay connected to the Lord; spend time in His presence, reading the Word and fellowshipping with His Spirit. Whatever you do, ensure the oil on your head and life is doing its work!

It was a privilege to engage with the bright and enthusiastic youth and young adults of ICGC, Roman Ridge branch, on the crucial theme of “The Thinking Believer.” 

We delved into the transformative power of consistent reading, emphasizing that a love for books is fundamental to growth and leadership. 

I shared practical, actionable tips to cultivate this habit, from starting small to leveraging technology and the power of community. 

The interactive session generated great questions, demonstrating their eagerness to learn and grow. We were also thrilled to gift them books to further fuel their intellectual journeys.

“O God, You are my God, earnestly will I seek You; my inner self thirsts for You, my flesh longs and is faint for You, in a dry and weary land where no water is.” (Psalm 63:1AMPC)

This scripture constantly reminds me of a period in my life, when I decided to stay away from the crowd and just be with the lord. And as the songwriter rightly put it…“The more we seek after Him…the more we yearn for Him.”

That period brought about major transformation in every aspect of my life, and now, it has become a lifestyle.

Dear friend, we cannot survive as spiritual beings without daily connecting with our maker through worship, prayer and studying of the word. 

I encourage you to prioritize your PERSONAL TIME with the Lord this New Year. And it is my prayer that as you diligently do this, God will speak to you regarding every aspect of your life and cause you to excel on every side.
